    Choose your pitch frame

Before you install your pétanque pitch, it's very important to decide on its location and dimensions so that you can get maximum enjoyment out of your favourite sport.

The Obut pétanque pitch frame range

We have developed our wooden pitches in partnership with a local joiner based near Saint-Bonnet-le-Château.

These quality pitches are child's play to assemble but are also designed to look great. They are made of easy-to-handle pine pieces, treated in a class 4 autoclave. They measure 16 cm x 16 cm and are 155 cm long. The pitch is assembled by simply fitting them together using special dovetails, and no tools are required.

We've tried and tested them over a number of years at pétanque events all over France.

Obut advice

To avoid major earthworks and get a high-quality, accessible pétanque pitch, create your pétanque pitch directly on top of a flat, perfectly drained surface.

    Moistening and levelling the sand

  • Step 1: drain the foundation with a Ø100 drainage pipe and 10/20 gravel, for example.
  • Step 2: lay a geotextile.
  • Step 3: lay a sub-base of crushed 0/31.5 granite, 25 cm thick.
  • Step 4: set out the pétanque area with the treated wooden frame.
  • Step 5: apply 0/8 sand in successive layers of up to 5 cm.
  • Step 6: wet the sand, level it and then compact it using a wacker plate or compactor.

Ideally, it takes two people to handle, align and construct the Obut pitch frame easily. No need for tools!

Here is a list of the accessories you'll need: shovel (or mini-shovel), rake, vibrating wacker plate, tape measure, wheelbarrow, and chalk line to carry out the additional ground work (gravel, sand, geotextile).

Of course, you can build your pétanque pitch using different materials, but it is very important that it is well drained to ensure the Obut pitch frame lasts as long as it should. Compact the sand after each successive layer to make playing pétanque as enjoyable as possible.

How long the work will take depends on the size of the pétanque pitch, whether the ground is flat or sloping, the tools used (mechanised or not), whether the installation is surface-mounted or in the ground, and the number of people involved.
