The rules

A game of pétanque consists of several ends or rounds. The end finishes when all the players have played all their pétanque boules. The teams then tally their points. The team that reaches 13 points first wins the game.

Tossing the jack

At the start of each end, throw the jack between 6 and 10 metres. It's very important to place the jack to suit your ability. Tossing the jack can become a real strategic choice throughout the game of pétanque. You can shorten or lengthen the game depending on how it goes or your opponent's strengths and weaknesses.

The target area

Before taking their shot, the pointer must assess the pitch to understand the "lay of the land". The target area (la donnée in French) is the place where they will land his pétanque boule. The target area is determined by the topography of the terrain or any obstacles that may be present. Once the "target area" has been found, the aim of the pointer is to fall within the "target area" and get as close as possible to the "jack".

position in the circle

Before playing their boule, the player must be positioned correctly in the circle. They don't have to stay in the middle of the circle. They can shift to the left or right, depending on the slope or obstacles in the middle of the pitch.

The three ways of pointing

  • 1. Rolling : the target area is closest to the circle. Recommended for smooth surfaces and beginners.
  • 2. The medium-range shot : the target area is in the middle. Suitable for all types of pitch and recommended for most players.
  • 3. The long-range shot : sending the boule high to land it as close as possible to the jack. Recommended for hard, stony terrain.

Stay on your toes! That's all there is to it !!!
