How to shoot your pétanque boule properly
Why shoot ?
Shooting allows the player to move the pétanque boule(s) away from their opponent when their opponent has pointed their boule very close to the jack and the player does not have enough space to win the point by pointing.
Shooting can also be used to score points if the shot boule takes the place of the boule next to the jack or if the shot boule manages to hit the jack and move it.

The rules of pétanque
A game of pétanque consists of several ends or rounds. The end finishes when all the players have played all their pétanque boules. The teams then tally their points. The team that reaches 13 points first wins the game.
The different types of shot
In pétanque, the shooter plays a vital role. Shooting allows you to thwart your opponents' strategies and score points.
There are different shooting techniques you can use, depending on a number of factors.

The direct shot
- This type of shooting requires a sharp technique and assiduous practice.
- The shooter's pétanque boule hits the centre of the opponent's boule.
- On difficult terrain with gravel, tarmac or high humidity.
- The shot boule remains in the correct position in the game.

The rolling shot
- This is probably the easiest shot to make in pétanque.
- A powerful low shot, the boule will rocket along the ground until it makes contact.
- On smooth, sandy ground with no obstacles between the shooter and the jack.
- The shot boule rarely stays in play.

The shot at the jack
This shot combines precision, strategy and knowledge of the pitch.
- Taking a shot at the jack to replay the end when the shooter has no other options.
- On all types of pitches.
- If the jack leaves the playing area, the end is cancelled.

Shooting in front of the boule
- A formidable skill for any pétanque game.
- The shooter's pétanque boule falls in front of the opponent's boule, rolls, and hits the target pétanque boule.
- On all types of pitches.
