Choice of steel
To meet the needs of all kinds of pétanque players, Obut uses steels belonging to two main categories in the composition of its petanque boules:
- Solid stainless steel
- Carbon steel
Stainless steel
As the mass of the metal is stainless steel, it is not liable to rust and will stay "cleaner" and shinier over time. It requires only occasional maintenance.
Coated carbon steel
It requires the application of an anti-corrosion coating at the end of the manufacturing process, which will wear with use and requires regular oiling to prevent oxidation.
Obut's advice
SOLID STAINLESS STEEL
- The soft touch of stainless steel
- Very long life
- Very slight oxidation possible.
CARBON STEEL:
- Offers the player an excellent hand grip.
- Has a temporary black coating which wears off with use due to friction with the ground.
- Requires regular maintenance to slow oxidation.
More about the different types of steel
To be used in official competitions, after meeting all the requirements of their specifications, petanque boules must be approved by the International and French Petanque and Jeu Provençal Federations (F.I.P.J.P. and F.F.P.J.P.).
Whatever the composition of a petanque boule (stainless steel or carbon steel), it has to be hollow with no foreign bodies inside.
